Saudade

As long as I can remember I’ve been fascinated by seeing new places. To discover and explore. To meet new people and to hear their stories… I’m not exactly sure when it all started, but especially one trip really woke my inner travel spirit. A trip to beautiful Ceará in the north-eastern part of Brazil.

Amazing landscape, wonderful beaches, tasty food, catchy rhythms and not least, all the lovely, warm smiles. No wonder why I fell in love with this beautiful country. And even now, several years later I still find myself daydreaming about the bonita Brasil. Even though my trip only lasted for three weeks, it made a huge impact on me, and I guess the country and the people will always stay with me in some way. It’s hard to find the right words to describe the feelings, but one Portuguese word comes to mind – saudade.

Some words just really don’t have equivalents in other languages. Saudade is such a word. According to The Huffington Post it can be explained as a mixture of longing for a person, place or pretty much anything in the world and nostalgia for someone or something that is no longer near or with you, whether its absence is temporary or permanent.

Well, my cure is to put on some Forró *, pour myself a caipirinha **, lean back, close my eyes and simply “go back”…
